Understanding Dental Anxiety and Phobia
Dental anxiety is a common concern for many patients. This type of anxiety can make patients feel nervous or even slightly afraid during their visits. For most patients, dental anxiety is a manageable condition that can be greatly mitigated when you visit a caring dentist like Dr. Nash who adheres to the highest safety standards.
Dental phobia is generally more debilitating and causes a patient to become extremely fearful of the dentist. These patients may even avoid routine preventive care because of their condition. If you struggle with dental phobia, know that we are here to help you feel comfortable and safe so that you can receive the care you need.
To help you feel completely comfortable during your appointments, we provide nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Dr. Nash can help determine which is best for your needs.
Nitrous oxide sedation is administered through inhalation. During your appointment, Dr. Nash will fit a small mask over your nose. This will allow you to breathe easily while maintaining access to your mouth. This appliance delivers nitrous oxide gas through a long tube. After just a few breaths, you will begin to feel relaxed and euphoric. While you will not go to sleep, nitrous oxide provides some amnestic effects so you likely will not remember your treatment after it is completed. As soon as your procedure is done, the nitrous oxide supply will be removed and you will return to full consciousness.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is administered in pill form. You will take this form of sedation before your appointment according to Dr. Nash's instruction and feel fully sedated by the time treatment begins. Take note that this type of sedation takes several hours to fully wear off, so you will need a friend or loved one to drive you to and from your appointment. Like nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation will make you feel very relaxed. You will experience a sort of "twilight" sleep, in which you are not fully unconscious but are completely relieved of anxiety and worry.
Deciding if Dental Sedation is Right for You
For patients with dental anxiety or phobia, sedation might be an essential part of their successful treatment. Even if you do not feel intense fear or concern about your dental visits, you may want to consider a sedative option. In addition to relieving fear, nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation help your appointments feel as though they are completed very quickly and leave you with little memory of your treatment. Sedation is also a great option for elderly patients, those who are undergoing multiple or complex procedures, or for anyone who might benefit from an extra level of relaxation.
