Nash Family Dentistry offers protective fluoride treatment for children and adults, which helps to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay. Our Vicksburg, MS, dental practice emphasizes preventive care to help patients' maintain smiles that are strong, healthy, and damage-free. In keeping with American Dental Association best practices, Dr. Kenneth Nash offers topical fluoride treatments to children between the ages of six months and 14 years, as well as to older patients, as needed. Our team can evaluate your smile to determine the best form of treatment for you.
A mineral that occurs naturally in food and water, fluoride increases the resistance of tooth enamel to the effects of plaque and bacteria. The bacteria in plaque combines with sugars in the mouth to create acids. Fluoride plays a key role in the remineralization of tooth enamel, decreasing the likelihood of damage from acidic erosion.
Primary teeth are naturally softer than permanent adult teeth, so our youngest patients are especially prone to cavities.
In children under six years of age, fluoride plays an important part in the development of permanent teeth, helping to harden the enamel surface. Fluoride treatment can not only prevent cavities, but actually reverse early tooth decay.
Topical Fluoride Treatment for Kids
Primary teeth are naturally softer than permanent adult teeth, so our youngest patients are especially prone to cavities. Even bottle-fed infants can experience tooth decay caused by the sugars in milk or juice.
Preventive dental care at Nash Family Dentistry includes fluoride treatments, as well as protective sealants for children and teens. Dr. Nash may recommend fluoride treatment every three months or twice a year. Your child’s treatment plan will depend upon their age and susceptibility to cavities.
Application of fluoride is a quick, simple, and painless procedure. We can apply fluoride varnish directly onto teeth, which hardens upon contact with saliva. This nontoxic solution is pleasant to the taste, but your child will be unable to remove it with their tongue. Per Dr. Nash’s instructions, the fluoride can be brushed off later the same day or the next day.
Treatment for Adults
Adult patients who are at increased risk for tooth decay can benefit from fluoride treatments as well. This includes patients who are historically prone to cavities as well as those who wear braces or have a dental bridge.
Other adult candidates for fluoride treatment include those affected by:
- Periodontal disease – Gum recession can expose the roots of teeth to bacteria, increasing the possibility of dental decay.
- Dry mouth – Some health conditions and medications cause decreased saliva, which can increase damage from natural acids in the mouth.
- Radiation treatment to the head or neck – Radiation can damage the salivary glands, heightening susceptibility to tooth decay.
In addition to topical treatments, Dr. Nash may prescribe fluoride in oral or tablet form for some patients.
